During a functional behavior assessment (FBA), we work to identify the root cause of behaviors that cause the client and or their caregivers distress. We take a client-centered approach, and interpret behavior as communication. Identifying the message behind the behavior allows us to identify potential solutions to address the need underlying the behavior. Basing your loved one or patient's positive behavior support plan on a solid understanding of the function of the behavior allows us to ensure that everyone's needs are met in the most pleasant and dignified manner possible.
Once we have gathered our information and identified the need underlying the behavior that needs to change, we develop a plan that works for your environment to support the client and his or her care team. This may include incorporating preferred activities, making changes to the environment to support the individual's needs, identifying alternate means of communication, and developing plans to support independent living to the fullest extent possible.
The best plan is only as good as its implementation, so once we have developed a plan, we will work with the client's supporters - caregivers, staff, others who will be involved in support and may be able to lend a hand - to make sure that the plan can be implemented. This may take time as we present new ways of working with the client, but it will ensure maximum benefit to the client. This may extend your loved one's time in a more independent setting, or improve their quality of life in an assisted living facility. For clients in assisted living facilities, this training will lead to quality of life improvements for the client as well as reducing the likelihood that staff will encounter disruptive behaviors.
